The woods near my home have a nice variety of tree species, but beeches are rare there. I had been watching a sweet young beech sapling for a few years, keeping climbing ivy off it, when disaster literally struck it.
To my dismay, a large tulip poplar had been hit by lightning during a storm, cracked off, and fell next to the sapling. Many of the little beech’s slender branches were scraped off or snapped.
Over the rest of that year, the beech kept its remaining green leaves. The following spring showed that it would survive and grow.
The white quilted branches and leaves in this wall hanging show what was, and what will be. Nature is resilient - if we can give it a chance.
