History of Cape Lookout Lighthouse
Cape Lookout has long been hazardous to navigation, yet is next to a bight which harbored many ships during fierce storms. The original tower was painted in horizontal red and white stripes but was not tall or bright enough to be effective. The replacement tower is 156 feet above sea level and visible 19 miles out at sea. Its distinctive black and white diamonds make it a useful daymark as well. It is now part of Cape Lookout National Seashore.
