History of Hooper Island Lighthouse
A stretch of dangerous shoals, halfway up the Chesapeake Bay’s low Eastern Shore, had long menaced navigators. The first recorded request for a light to mark this area was made in 1897. Funds were appropriated by Congress the next year, but work did not actually begin until the summer of 1901 when the 33-foot-diameter caisson for Hooper Island Light was put in place. The 63-foot-high lighthouse began operating on June 1, 1902. The lighthouse now runs automatically.
