History of Key West Lighthouse
The first Key West lighthouse, built in 1825 on Whiteheads Point, was destroyed by a hurricane in 1846. The keeper and his family were killed. A new tower was quickly put in place the same year since the nearby waters were so treacherous. After fifty years the tower height was increased from 60 to 86 feet. The Coast Guard discontinued the Lighthouse in 1969 because the coastline was accreting, rendering it too far inland to be effective.
