History of Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse
The hexagonal screwpile lighthouse, built in 1875, at Thomas Point Shoal is the third marking this navigational hazard. The first two lighthouses, built in 1825 and 1838, were ineffective in design and also placement, since they were built on land at Thomas Point. However, when ice damaged the screwpile light in 1877, the old 1838 tower had to be used temporarily. Piles of stones were placed around the current building in 1886 to protect it from being damaged by floating ice.
